Ribeira

Cais da Ribeira

Porto's postcard face: coloured houses stacked by the river

Tickets
Free (Guindais funicular €4 one way)
Address
The riverside quay and Praça da Ribeira, just downstream of the Dom Luís I Bridge

Narrow houses lean shoulder to shoulder up the riverbank, painted orange, yellow and sky blue, laundry hanging from the windows and nearly every ground floor turned into a terrace restaurant. At the end of the quay the Dom Luís I Bridge passes overhead, and across the water the port houses of Gaia line up their signs. This is the lower edge of the old town that UNESCO listed in 1996, and a few flights of back-alley steps take you away from almost all the crowds.
