This is where the island runs out into the sea. Climb the central steps to a terrace with a big shade tree, a pavilion and a shrine crowded with elephant statues of every size. Take the path down to the left and the sea opens up past the palms, with the little islands of Ko Kaeo offshore. Around sunset the crowds and cars pour in to watch the sun go down over the western horizon, then leave all at once. By day it's quiet and the photos come out crisp.
