Past the pigeons and the vermilion hall of Osu Kannon, a grid of covered arcades opens up. Fried chicken skewers, Taiwanese fried chicken cutlets and Brazilian bakeries all compete for your nose; a vintage clothing shop sits next to a figure store next to an old rice-cracker maker. The roofs mean you can wander all day in the rain, which is why Nagoya families treat it as a weekend stroll. Many shops close early, so this is a daytime outing.
