Ludwig II's 19th-century dream of the Middle Ages. From Mary's Bridge over the gorge, the white castle seems to float above the forest on its crag, the exact picture everyone knows. Inside is by 30-minute guided tour only, through rooms painted with Wagner opera scenes and one done up as a grotto; tours run in English and German, and audio guides cover more languages. With 4–5 hours of round-trip travel from Munich, it eats the whole day.
