Walk up Via Dante from the Duomo and a red-brick wall and clock tower close off the end of the street. Through the gate are big open courtyards, free for anyone to wander. A ticket gets you into the museums inside; the star is the Rondanini Pietà, displayed on its own in the old Spanish hospital wing. Michelangelo was still chipping at it days before he died, and the two rough, leaning figures look startlingly modern. Out the back gate, Parco Sempione runs all the way to the Arch of Peace.
