Address
The old town on a hill wrapped on three sides by the Tagus; pin is on the cathedral

From the lookouts across the river, the Tagus wraps the hill like a moat, with the cathedral spire and the square Alcázar rising above a pile of rooftops. Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities lived side by side here for centuries, so the lanes throw up churches, former mosques and synagogues in turn. The one to go inside is the cathedral: gilded altarpieces, the Transparente where light pours through a hole cut in the vault, and a sacristy hung with El Grecos. The old town is steep; ride the escalators up from near the bus station and walk down.
