A fortress built by the Moors and enlarged by Portuguese kings, sitting on the hill in the middle of town. Walk through the gate and you hit a wide terrace lined with cannons, pines overhead, and a clear sweep over the rooftops, the Tagus and the 25 de Abril bridge. In the inner keep you can walk the ramparts from tower to tower, and peacocks wander the lawns near the excavated old quarter. The castle itself is a backdrop; the view from up here is the point.
