Address
The lighthouse at Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe's westernmost point; Cascais is a seaside town 30 minutes south by bus

A stone cross on top of a 140-metre cliff, and beyond it nothing but Atlantic. The monument quotes Camões: here, where the land ends and the sea begins. The wind is strong enough to shove you, and surf smashes white at the foot of the cliffs. A red-roofed lighthouse and wildflower slopes are all there is, so half an hour does it. The bus then drops down to Cascais, a resort town of three small beaches, a marina and wave-patterned cobbled lanes. Seafood lunch, a walk by the water, train home.
