A white limestone fort jutting out into the river, built 500 years ago to guard the mouth of Lisbon's harbour. Look closely and the walls are carved with rope knots and armillary spheres, and a rhinoceros head hides under one of the turrets. It was shut for conservation work until spring 2026 and reopened on 26 May. Inside, a single narrow spiral stair links the floors, and the top terrace frames the Tagus and the 25 de Abril bridge. Plenty of people decide the outside, seen from the lawn along the river, is enough.
