Walk east along Shijo-dori and the vermilion West Gate fills the end of the street. Climb the steps and the open-sided Buden hall is hung with hundreds of white lanterns, best after dark when they're lit. This is the shrine behind the Gion Matsuri, which runs all through July. It backs onto Maruyama Park, where people head in spring for the huge weeping cherry.
