This lawn is where, at midnight on 31 August 1957, the Union Jack came down and the Malayan flag went up. Across the road the Sultan Abdul Samad Building piles copper domes and a clock tower on red brick and rows of Mughal-style arches, and it looks even better lit up at night. At the west end stands the black-and-white mock-Tudor clubhouse of the colonial-era Royal Selangor Club. Five minutes on foot brings you to Masjid Jamek, where the two rivers meet, and the River of Life walkway.
