You leave the city in the afternoon, reach a wetland village for tea, then board the first boat. Troops of proboscis monkeys, noses drooping, gather in the mangrove treetops to settle for the night, with long-tailed macaques and kingfishers passing by. After sunset there's dinner and a second boat. Out on the black river with the engine off, a whole riverside tree blinks like Christmas lights, and every light is a firefly.
