Two hours of winding mountain road and the air turns cool, with Mount Kinabalu's jagged granite crown standing right in front of you. Around the park headquarters there are mossy forest trails and the Kinabalu botanical garden, so you get a taste of montane forest without climbing anything. Day tours usually stop at the Nabalu viewpoint and the Kundasang fruit market, come here, then carry on to Poring Hot Springs. After about 10am the peak tends to disappear into cloud.
