North Shore & Haleʻiwa
Haleʻiwa Town
Surf-town strolling, garlic shrimp and turtles napping on the sand
⚠ Keep 3 m from the turtles
- Hours
- Most shops open daytime only (varies by shop)
- Tickets
- Free (food and some parking extra)
- Address
- Haleiwa, the surf town on the north coast, with shops and food trucks along Kamehameha Highway
Cut across the middle of the island for about an hour and you reach Haleiwa, a surf town of low wooden storefronts. The routine is set: browse the surf shops and the Patagonia store, queue for Matsumoto Shave Ice, then eat garlic shrimp at Giovanni's truck. A little further east is Laniakea Beach, where with luck a sea turtle will be dozing on the sand. Winter brings huge waves and the surfers who chase them; in summer the sea flattens out enough to snorkel at Shark's Cove.
