A copy of Kyoto's Byodo-In, built in 1968, sits against the Koolau cliffs like a stage set. The pond in front of the red hall is packed with koi that follow anyone holding food. A big bell by the entrance is there to be rung, and the low hum rolls across the valley. An hour covers the loop, and the best day is right after rain, when cloud snags on the ridge.
