The cramped walled settlement that once held tens of thousands was demolished in the early 1990s, and a Jiangnan-style garden now sits on the site. Between ponds, pavilions and covered walkways, you stumble on the old gate foundations, cannons and stone tablets set into the ground. The former magistrate's office is now a small exhibition hall with photos and models of how the place worked. Ringed by apartment blocks, the quiet garden feels oddly out of place, which is part of the charm.
