Limestone peaks stand like folding screens above rice fields and rivers, and for two or three hours a rower takes you and three others through caves and past riverside shrines. Apart from the oar in the water it's silent, and reviewers keep saying it feels like time has stopped. You duck through several caves with ceilings almost at head height and stop to climb to small temples. Day tours from Hanoi usually combine the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, the Trang An boat and the 500-step viewpoint at Hang Mua.
