A small island a short hop from Sung Sot Cave; boat access only

Behind a crescent of sand, steep stone steps zigzag to the top: roughly 400 of them, about 20 minutes at an easy pace. From the summit pavilion dozens of islands and the boats between them fit into a single frame; a good share of all Ha Long photos are taken right here. The island is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with Ho Chi Minh in 1962, and his statue stands by the beach. Most cruises leave time for a swim once you're back down.
