Stone steps climb between centuries-old cedars to a vermilion main hall, and the air turns cool and mossy on the way up. The queue, though, is down at the water, for the Peace Torii planted in the shallows of Lake Ashi. When your turn comes you stand under it with the lake at your back and take the shot; it's become a ritual. If the line is hopeless, an angle from the side still gets the gate and the water.
