A white torii stands in the shallows, and beyond it two rocks joined by a thick sacred rope, the 'wedded rocks', take the waves. At low tide the sand runs almost up to the gate, and at sunset the sun drops between the rocks while people line the beach steps to watch. Itoshima's coastal road strings together sea-view cafés and photo props like swings and sculptures, so most people make a half-day drive of it rather than just this one stop. It's often windy, so bring a layer.
