The whole sandbar between Hakata Bay and the open sea is parkland. In spring the hills turn nemophila blue; in autumn kochia and cosmos wash them red and pink. You will not cover it on foot, so rent a bike at the gate and ride the seaside path. The cycling road runs under a tunnel of cherry trees, and there are play areas and an animal zone if you bring kids. It is about 30 minutes by train from the centre, an easy half-day picnic.
