The Beppu Hells are seven hot pools where boiling water and steam erupt from the ground, toured as 'hells'. The headline act, Umi Jigoku, is 98°C water of an unreal sea-blue, glimpsed through drifting white steam. A short ride away, Chinoike Jigoku is a pool of blood-red mud, and at Tatsumaki Jigoku a geyser shoots up at regular intervals. Around Kannawa, steam leaks from drains and rooftops on every lane, as if the whole town were a steamer basket. Don't skip the onsen-steamed eggs and pudding at Umi Jigoku's shop, or the free footbath.
