Address
4-7-1 Saifu, Dazaifu, 5 minutes up the approach from Nishitetsu Dazaifu station

The shrine honours Sugawara no Michizane, god of learning, so it's hung thick with wooden prayer plaques from students facing exams. The approach from the station is lined with shops grilling umegae-mochi, rice cakes stamped with a plum blossom, and walking up with a hot one in hand is the done thing. Cross three arched red bridges and you're in grounds ringed by ponds and ancient camphor trees. The main hall has been under major restoration since 2023, but front-facing worship reopened on 19 September 2026 after about three and a half years. The Kengo Kuma-designed Starbucks on the approach, built from woven timber sticks, is a photo stop of its own.
