This is the Tuscany of postcards: wheat fields and pasture rolling like waves, a lone farmhouse on a crest, a line of cypresses snaking down to it. The landscape has been on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 2004. Tours typically stop for photos on the cypress-lined roads and at a tiny chapel on a hill, break for pecorino and lunch in Pienza, a town built as a Renaissance ideal city, then go on to the wine town of Montepulciano. A common version starts in Rome, takes in Civita di Bagnoregio and the Val d'Orcia, and drops you in Florence in the evening, doubling as your transfer.
