Sculptor Edvard Eriksen cast Andersen's mermaid in bronze in 1913. Almost everyone's first reaction is a laugh and 'is that it?', since she's only about 1.25 metres tall. Some say the view from behind, looking out to sea from her rock, is the better one. On her own she's an anticlimax, so make her the end of a walk: Nyhavn, Amalienborg, then along the star-shaped ramparts of Kastellet.
