The road twists up the mountain for about twenty minutes, then drops you at the foot of a staircase lined with seven-headed naga serpents. Climb all 306 steps and the gilded chedi is throwing sunlight back at you while barefoot pilgrims circle it clockwise. Walk to the edge of the terrace and the whole of Chiang Mai spreads out below, airport runway included. If the steps look like too much, there's a lift (locals call it the cable car) beside the ticket booth. Sunset tours that stay until the city lights come on are popular.
