Under an octagonal pavilion stands a large wooden cross, said to encase the one Magellan's crew planted when they landed in 1521, though historians still argue over whether the original is really inside. Look up and the ceiling mural shows the first baptisms. Next door, the Basilica del Santo Niño keeps the small Christ Child statue Magellan is said to have given Cebu's queen, and even on weekdays a queue of people waits to touch the glass case and pray. Out in the courtyard, women selling red candles sway and pray on your behalf, which is half the reason to come.
