Punta Engaño Road, Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, about 10 minutes by car from resorts like Shangri-La and JPark

In April 1521, the Mactan chieftain Lapulapu fought Magellan's men on this shore and Magellan died in the battle. A huge bronze Lapulapu with sword and shield stands in the middle of the park, and across from him is the Magellan monument the Spanish put up. One side honours the hero, the other the invader, which makes it more fun once you know the story. Next to the park, the Shrine market is a row of stalls selling keyrings, wooden cups and bracelets with your name woven in. It's close to the resorts, so it fills a spare hour before a flight.
