This was the main avenue when the Fatimids founded Cairo, and its kilometre or so is still lined with Mamluk mosques, madrasas and public fountains. By day you hear coppersmiths hammering; at night the facades are lit and the street fills with strollers and young Cairenes taking photos. The marble inlay under the Qalawun complex's dome and the carved wooden screens of the Ottoman house Bayt al-Suhaymi are the standouts. No cars, so it's far easier walking than the Khan.
