About 2,300 UN soldiers killed in the Korean War rest here, in the only cemetery in the world run by the UN itself. Identical headstones stand in neat rows across a wide lawn. A memorial hall near the entrance tells the story of the 22 participating nations. Double cherry blossoms line the paths in April, but this is a place of remembrance, so walk quietly. Right in the middle of the city, it is strangely still.
