An active volcano 1,717 metres high, rising beside Lake Batur inside a huge caldera. Treks set off by headlamp around 4am and climb for close to two hours, the last stretch on slippery volcanic gravel. At the top you sit with a steam-cooked egg and a banana sandwich while the sun comes up behind Mount Agung and, across the sea, Lombok's Rinjani. If walking doesn't appeal, a 4WD jeep takes you up across the black lava fields to a sunrise viewpoint, a popular choice for short trips.
