A white, temple-fronted building sits on the crest of the Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park. The ground floor Māori and Pacific galleries are the reason to come: a war canoe carved from a single trunk and a full carved meeting house standing indoors. The Māori cultural performance (extra ticket) puts a haka a few metres in front of you. Upstairs are volcanoes, natural history and the war memorial halls, and from the front steps you look out over the harbour and islands.
