An old French-château-style stone building with a glass roof held up by kauri-timber columns that branch like trees. The collection galleries are free for everyone, which makes it the best rainy-hour escape in the CBD. Stand in front of the Goldie and Lindauer portraits of Māori elders from around 1900 and you can follow every line of the moko. Out the back door is Albert Park, good for a sit on the grass afterwards.
