Behind a swinging bookcase in an ordinary canal-house warehouse, a steep staircase climbs to a few small rooms where eight people lived in near silence for more than two years. The furniture is mostly gone, but the film-star pictures Anne pasted on her wall and the pencil marks measuring the children's heights are still there. You finish in front of the real diary, then step outside to hear the bells of the Westerkerk next door, the same ones she wrote about.
