The Nine Streets are the lanes crossing three canals west of Dam (Huidenstraat and friends); the Jordaan spreads northwest around Westerstraat

Nine short lanes ladder across three canals, each one packed with vintage clothing, cheese shops and tiny boutiques, so you end up zigzagging: down a lane, over a bridge, into the next. Push a little north and you're in the Jordaan, all low brick houses with plants on the windowsills and dark-wood brown cafés. Monday mornings bring a flea market to the Noordermarkt, and Saturdays an organic market.
