Inside a building designed like a Tang palace, more than 3,000 objects run in order from prehistory to the Qing. The Tang rooms are where you get why this city was once Chang'an: horsewomen figurines, gold vessels, a band of musicians riding a camel, and that's where the crowds bunch up. The main display is free, but getting a slot is a scramble; those who miss out often go in on a paid Trip.com package (around US$35). If you have time, the ¥270 Tang mural gallery shows original tomb murals.
