In 1516 the Republic confined its Jews to this quarter and locked the gates at night, and the English word ghetto is often traced back here. The square is still lined with unusually tall buildings, a result of cramming people into too little land. Add the guided tour to your museum ticket and you get into synagogues hidden on the upper floors of ordinary-looking buildings. A few kosher bakeries and small shops sit around the square, and the neighbourhood is quiet even at midday.
