The Steam Clock stands at Water and Cambie streets; Maple Tree Square is about 300 m east

This is where Vancouver began: the city grew out from the saloon 'Gassy' Jack Deighton opened in 1867, and the red-brick warehouses and cobbled Water Street are still here. The crowd gathers at the Steam Clock, which hisses out a puff every 15 minutes and plays a whistle tune on the hour. After that you drift between the bars, restaurants and souvenir shops in the old brick buildings and end up staying for dinner.
