The shrine honours Sugawara no Michizane, god of learning. The grounds are packed with ema plaques where students wrote their wishes. From early February to early March the plum garden opens in pink and white. Close to Tokyo University, exam season brings students in uniform and parents in line. Most days it is a quiet hillside shrine.
