Little red torii crowd together along a slope into a tunnel, and at the end a few steps lead up to a gilded main hall. It is not a mountain climb like Fushimi Inari in Kyoto; the loop takes five minutes, which is why so few people queue for photos. Behind the shrine a hillside of some 3,000 azaleas bursts out together through April. Leave on the Yanaka side and you walk straight into old shopping streets and back lanes.
