Taiwan's largest freshwater lake, ringed by layer after layer of green hills. Boats from Shuishe Pier loop to the Indigenous village of Ita Thao and Xuanguang Temple, and you can hop off and on. In Ita Thao, try wild boar sausage and local black tea; the ropeway lifts you high above the water. The lakeshore cycle path from Shuishe is easy enough for beginners in an hour or two. Fog often rolls in from about 3pm, so leave early to see the water at its best.
