Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island

Convict and shipyard island by ferry

Address
An island in west Sydney Harbour where the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers meet

The ferry docks beside rusty cranes and huge brick workshops. The island was a convict prison, then a shipyard, and is now World Heritage listed. You can walk through the tunnels used as wartime shelters, and from the top there's a view back to the city skyline. You can also sleep over in a glamping tent or camp. Landing is free; you just pay the ferry fare.
