The sea once lapped the street outside. Hokkien sailors came here to thank Mazu, goddess of the sea, for a safe landing, and the temple took its present form in the 1840s. Dragon-wrapped pillars, gilded woodwork and tiles shipped from China frame the courtyard, and the structure is often said to be joined without nails. Through the incense smoke you can see the financial towers, and that contrast is the charm of this street.
