Come in the dry season and the scale is startling: houses perch on skinny wooden stilts several storeys high, with kids running and nets drying underneath. By the end of the rains the water has climbed nearly to the doorsteps and boats pull up at the front door, so the same village looks completely different by season. The boat runs through the village channel, then you switch to a paddle canoe through flooded mangrove, and finish out on the lake itself, wide as a sea, for sunset. Chong Kneas, the closest village to town, has a reputation for donation pressure and overcharging, so most reviews point you to Kampong Phluk or the larger Kampong Khleang instead.
