After Angkor Wat this one looks toy-sized, but every inch of its reddish sandstone is carved. Each triangular pediment holds a scene from Hindu myth, and the sanctuary walls are lined with goddess figures with piled-up hair, so finely cut that the name is usually translated as 'citadel of women'. It dates from the late 900s, around 150 years before Angkor Wat. The central shrines are roped off, so you look in from outside, but when low morning sun hits the stone and it shifts from pink to orange, you don't need to get any closer.
