More than 400 wineries are scattered along this long, narrow valley. Many visitors take a day tour from San Francisco to two or three of them: walk through cellars stacked with oak barrels, hear the staff talk you through it, and taste a few reds and whites. Queuing for a photo at the Welcome to Napa Valley sign is part of the ritual. Wine lovers perk up at names like Stag's Leap and Chateau Montelena, the winners of the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
