Ferries leave only from Alcatraz Landing, Pier 33 on the Embarcadero

The boat from Pier 33 takes about 15 minutes. Climb the steep path to the cellhouse and the headphone tour begins, narrated by former guards and inmates, in several languages. You pass the narrow barred cells, the vents the 1962 escapees dug out with spoons, the dining hall and the solitary block. Step outside and the city looks close enough to touch across the water, which, the tour points out, made it worse for the men inside.
