A sourdough bakery founded in the 1849 Gold Rush that says it still bakes from the same mother dough. Through the windows you can watch bakers shape dough and turn out crab- and alligator-shaped loaves while you queue. The draw is the bread bowl: a round sourdough hollowed out and filled to the brim with clam chowder. Come in chilled from the bay wind, spoon the soup, then tear off the walls and dunk them. Bakers Hall downstairs is fast counter service; Bistro Boudin upstairs is a sit-down room for seafood and pasta.
