Golden Gate Park is the long strip of woodland that runs across the west of the city to the ocean, and in its middle sits the de Young, its copper skin weathering to green. The American paintings, African and Oceanic art and costume shows are worth a look, but the big draw is the Hamon Tower on the 9th floor. Ride the lift up without a museum ticket and the glass walls give you the park, the Pacific, downtown and, on a clear day, the Golden Gate's towers. The Japanese Tea Garden is right next door.
