Blue Bottle started across the bay in Oakland. Plenty of visitors come to this Ferry Building counter thinking it's the 'first shop', but the original is a small kiosk in Hayes Valley. Still, this is the branch that introduced the brand to tourists, and there's always a line. It's an open counter with no seating, so take your cup out to the benches behind the building and drink it facing the Bay Bridge. They sell plenty of beans, tumblers and merch, and some people spend more on those than on coffee.
